1⃣ When “-ed” sounds like /ɪd(id) 🔵 When the verb already ends with a /t/ or /d/ sound. 🔷want /wɒnt/ → wanted /ˈwɒntɪd/ 🔷need /niːd/ → needed /ˈniːdɪd/ 🟦 Reason: two /t/ or /d/ sounds together are hard to hear, so English adds a small vowel /ɪ/ to separate them. ✨🦋💫🫐✨🦋💫🫐✨🦋💫🫐✨🦋💫 2⃣ When “-ed” sounds like /d/ 🔵after voiced sounds (you can feel vibration in your throat) that are not /t/ or /d/. 🔷play /pleɪ/ → played /pleɪd/ 🔷call /kɔːl/ → called /kɔːld/ 🔷clean /kliːn/ → cleaned /kliːnd/ 🟦 Put your fingers on your throat; if it vibrates on the last sound of the verb (play, call, clean), then “-ed” is /d/. 🟦 For verbs ending in voiced sounds except /d/.
