The Day of Shame On the evening of 8 September 1943 the radio spoke, and Italy died its first death. At 19:42 Marshal Pietro Badoglio, the eternal survivor of Caporetto, read the words that dissolved a nation: the armistice with the Anglo-Americans had been accepted, all hostility against them was to cease. From that night onward there were no longer one Italy, but two. Two irreconcilable souls, two destinies that could never again be reconciled under the same flag. In the South, under the guns and flags of the Anglo-American invaders, the old Italy survived. It was the Italy of the Throne, of the House of Savoy that had once watched the Blackshirts march on Rome in 1922 and calculated that it could use the Revolution as a tool to preserve itself. It was the Italy of Victor Emmanuel III, the little king who had accepted the Fascist regime when it brought order and prestige, and who discarded both the Duce and the Revolution on the night of 25 July when wind turned other direction. From Brindisi this Italy spoke the language of "institutions," of "continuity," of "co-belligerency." In truth it spoke the language of the old liberal Italietta; the Italy of Giolitti’s transforms, of parliamentary compromise, of a ruling class that had always preferred survival to greatness. It was the Italy of rot: titles without substance, bureaucracy without soul. It now sought only to return to the comfortable mediocrity of the pre-1922 world, protected by foreign bayonets. Against this stood the Italy of the North: the Italian Social Republic, proclaimed in the autumn of 1943 under the black banners that still remembered the Fasci di Combattimento of 1919 and the blood of the squadristi, of Arditi, of Fiume. This was not a mere remnant clinging to power. It was the attempt to return Fascism to its original revolutionary matrix, to strip away the monarchical and bourgeois compromises that had diluted the Revolution during the twenty years of the Regime. This was the Italy of the young. Of the volunteers who refused the radio order of 8 September and kept their weapons. Of the men who remembered that Fascism had been born in the trenches and in the streets against both red Bolshevism and the soft, corrupt liberalism of the old order. It was the Italy that still invoked the Roman spirit of discipline and the Mazzinian dream of a nation made through sacrifice. a social, anti-capitalist, anti-monarchical Fascism, purified by defeat, betrayal and blood. The Italy of the Throne and of rot chose life without honor, continuity without dignity, the safety of the old world under new masters.The social, young Italy of the North chose, imperfectly, tragically, under the shadow of a powerful ally and of imminent defeat to remain faithful to the belief that Fascism had never been merely a regime of order, but a revolutionary idea that demanded total commitment. That division, born in the night of the treason, still echoes. For it revealed that when the decisive hour came, one part of Italy preferred to survive as the client of yesterday’s powers, while the other, however doomed, attempted to become the Italy that the Blackshirts of 1919 had once dreamed of building: young, social, hard, and free of the rot of the Throne and yesterday.
