Happy Cultural Friday.
Today is all about Marqaa: our warm, comforting traditional Oromo dish (also known as ‘Genfo’ in Amharic and ‘Ga’at’ in Tigrigna).
Marqaa is originally a traditional meal from the Oromia region, but it has since been adopted throughout Ethiopia.
Made from barley flour and carefully stirred until thick and smooth, Marqaa is served with a well in the center filled with fresh butter. Simple ingredients, but rich in meaning.

Derba Waterfall is located in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, within the scenic Muger Valley near the Derba Cement Factory. It lies approximately 45 km north of Chancho town and over 100 km from Finfinnee |Addis Ababa| (around 9.43° N, 38.65° E). This high-altitude, single-cataract waterfall dramatically cascades from the Derba Escarpment into the breathtaking valley below.
You can visit all year roun,but we highly recommend coming during the spring season, when the landscape turns lush and green, and the waterfall flows more beautifully after the seasonal rains.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Asmarom Legesse. A distinguished scholar, a proud son of Oromia, and a global voice of the Gadaa System.
Through his research and lifelong dedication, Professor Asmarom introduced the wisdom, democracy, and philosophy of the Oromo Gadaa System to the world. His work gave international recognition to one of Africa’s most remarkable indigenous governance systems.
May his legacy continue to inspire generations.

One is observed at the dawn of the rainy season, usually in early October, beside rivers and lakes, symbolizing renewal, life, and heartfelt thanksgiving. The second unfolds during the autumn season and is known as Irreechaa Tulluu, the hill festival, where gratitude and reflection rise from the highlands.
This season, hills come alive with culture, color, and unity. Barak Mountain in Sandaafaa Bakkee is beautifully adorned by the local community, as elders lead the people in climbing the hills to offer thanks to Waaqaa, the Creator, for the blessings received and to pray for peace in the seasons ahead. 📍 Kundudo Mountain | Eastern Hararghe, Oromia
Discover the stunning Kundudo Mountain in the Eastern Hararghe Zone, Gursum District, rising nearly 3,000 meters above sea level with breathtaking views that often place you above the clouds. On the wide grassy summit, it feels like you are standing in the sky while a sea of mist floats beneath your feet.
Kundudo’s true treasure is its feral horse population, one of the only wild living horse groups in East Africa. Believed to descend from domestic horses left behind centuries ago, these rare horses roam freely across the mountain plateau, surviving in this unique highland habitat. Conservation efforts continue to protect and grow their population, making Kundudo a powerful symbol of nature, resilience, and freedom.
