Reading Passage: Angkor Wat Temple✅ Angkor Wat is one of the most famous historical monuments in the world and is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II and was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Later, it became an important Buddhist temple, which it remains today. The temple is admired for its impressive size, detailed stone carvings, and perfect symmetry. Angkor Wat is surrounded by a large moat, which symbolized the ocean surrounding Mount Meru, the sacred mountain in Hindu belief. The walls of the temple are decorated with long bas-reliefs that tell stories from ancient epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Angkor Wat was once part of the powerful Khmer Empire, which ruled much of Southeast Asia. Although the empire eventually declined, the temple was never completely abandoned. This helped preserve it better than many other ancient sites in the region. Today, Angkor Wat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Cambodia’s most important cultural symbols. It attracts millions of tourists every year and appears on the Cambodian national flag, representing national pride, history, and identity.
