Quick update on the Agora AID program. The deadline was June 10th, and we mean it when we say everyone who applied on time has our full respect. We genuinely weren't planning to extend it. But over the past few days, a lot of people reached out asking if they could still apply. And we mean — a lot. So we're offering one final chance to apply: applications are open until 23th of June, 23:59 [Tashkent time] This is also a chance for those who couldn't apply due to the technical issues on our form. A must-watch if you are pursuing AI, engineering, or just STEM in general!

🏛 2001: A Space Odyssey 🏛 Kubrick explores many heavy concepts. But we want to look closer into one specific concept from the movie: AI Alignment. An AI called HAL 9000 accompanies the Discovery One crew as they traverse the solar system toward Jupiter, pursuing a secretive mission. HAL malfunctions mid-journey and manages to kill the entire crew except the mission commander, David Bowman, switches it off before it can finish its rampage murder. Many think HAL malfunctioned. But in reality it didn’t. Before the mission, HAL was given two instructions that contradicted each other: complete the mission (1) and keep the mission’s actual aim a secret (2). When the crew unknowingly threatens the mission, HAL pursues the only logical path for him: eliminating the crew. HAL was perfectly following the orders. Didn’t malfunction at all. It was clinically rational. It is the same AI Alignment problem our brightest scientist-engineers ponder on this time around. Many think of AI alignment as being entirely technical. That, with enough compute and the right code, we can ensure AI does what we want and poses no existential risk. But AI alignment is a human problem as much as a technical one. We are not aligned ourselves. We don't know what we truly want. We are tentative about our values. AI merely mirrors that back at us. Watch it if you are into engineering and philosophy, and if you like classical music that the movie plays throughout the space odyssey. Kubrick is a genius. @agora_writing
