What the bill actually does: Removes the sunset clause — these powers are now permanent Allows compulsory questioning of children as young as 14 Lets the Attorney-General personally issue questioning warrants — no court approval required Makes it a criminal offence to tell anyone (including your family) that you’ve been questioned Gives ASIO the power to reject your chosen lawyer and severely restricts what your lawyer can do or say during questioning Strips away your right to silence — you must answer their questions or face jail This is not about catching terrorists anymore. This is about giving an intelligence agency the power to secretly drag any Australian in for interrogation without suspecting you of any crime. 106 politicians just voted to hand ASIO these powers. Only 8 had the courage to vote No. Your right to remain silent? Your right to proper legal defense? Your right to know when the state is targeting you? Gone. Eroded. Normalised. We have been holding back on being too active on Ryan's behalf until now as he wasnt a member of the NSN and is being deported simply for giving us some super cheap boxing lessons. He has only known us since September and only met us because he came to meet a girl he liked at the 1st March for Australia and just got talking to us out of curiosity. Ryan is instantly likable by all and chats with everyone and anyone. We have been more standoffish with his case because we didnt want to jeapordise it by our involvement. But now the NSN is disbanded and Ryan is struggling to cover his legal bills. He is putting his entire life savings of $25,000 to pay the lawyer's estimated fees but is still $15,000 short of what will be needed. He is expected to be held in jail for a year or more before his case is heard. His only crime: giving a few talentless pricks like me group boxing lessons.
