TAKE POINT Do you really need 25% to take? In backgammon, 25% is a useful benchmark — but it is not a universal take point. In a simple gammon-free money game with no future cube action, 25% is the break-even point between taking and dropping. But real positions are usually more complex. Your decision can also depend on: • gammon and backgammon risks • recube potential • cube efficiency • match score • your actual winning chances That means the same 25% can lead to different decisions in different positions. A good cube decision is not just about asking: “Can I win often enough?” It is about asking: “Is taking worth more than dropping in this position?” 25% is the benchmark. The position gives it meaning. Swipe through the carousel to see how Take Point really works.

PRIME vs. PRIME In backgammon, not every battle is about moving faster. A prime is a sequence of consecutive made points that blocks opposing checkers from escaping. When both players have primes with checkers trapped behind them, the position becomes a prime-vs-prime battle. And this is where things get interesting. The key factor is often timing — how long you can preserve your important points before your opponent is forced to weaken theirs. That means being ahead in the pip count is not always an advantage. In some prime-vs-prime positions, the player who is farther behind in the race may actually have better timing and be able to maintain the blockade longer. When evaluating the position, look at: • prime length • trapped checkers • where those checkers are located • escape chances • timing • whether the prime can be improved or rolled forward PRIME vs. PRIME IS NOT JUST A RACE. It is a battle of blockade, escape and timing. Swipe through the carousel to see how these positions really work.
