"Leo Tolstoy Resting in the Woods", 1891 Artist / Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844–1930) 💐 Oil on canvas 60×50 cm Repin and Tolstoy had known each other since 1880. Over the years, Repin painted several unconventional portraits of Tolstoy, all marked by an easy, intimate warmth. This portrait was inspired by Repin’s visit to Yasnaya Polyana in the summer of 1891. After returning to a rainy St. Petersburg a few days later, he began working from memory. The recollections carried him back to the Tolstoy estate: “Lev Nikolayevich was lying nearby, a book in hand, in a quiet spot beneath the trees, shaded from the sun. How beautifully the sunlight filtered through the branches, dappling his figure with patches of light! I kept studying it, recalling it, savoring it—such a vivid image emerged...” InspoVault

"Portrait of Madame X", 1884 Artist / John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) 🟤🟤🟤 Canvas, oil 234.85 × 109.86 cm The Portrait of Madame X depicts Virginie Gautreau, a Parisian socialite renowned for her beauty, painted in 1884 by American artist John Singer Sargent. The painting shows a woman in a black evening gown with jeweled straps. In the original version, one strap was provocatively slipping off her shoulder—a detail that sparked controversy. The portrait is defined by the striking contrast between her pale skin and the dark dress and background. InspoVault

Reading. Portrait of S.N. Kramskaya, ca. 1866–1869 Artist / Ivan Kramskoy (1837–1887) 🖤🖤🖤 Oil on canvas 64.5 x 56 cm Sofya Nikolaevna is portrayed by Kramskoy in a light dress, absorbed in reading on a bench beneath the shade of an old, leafy park. The checkered "Scottish" blanket draped over her to shield against drafts is clearly no accidental detail in the composition. This portrait, along with several other works from the artist’s 1860s period, suggests that Kramskoy was drawn to the sentimental-romantic tradition of English portraiture during his “artel” years. During the era of the “great reforms” in the 1860s, the English school of painting from the 18th to the early 19th century appealed to artists like Kramskoy through its vision of a free, natural individual—someone with an innate sense of dignity, powerfully expressed in portraiture.
