⚡️⚡️⚡️First-Ever Census of Gangetic Dolphins: Key Findings and Conservation Efforts ➡️Key Findings of the Census • Total Count: 6,327 river dolphins • Ganges river dolphins: 6,324 • Indus river dolphins: 3 (in Beas river) • Distribution: • Ganga main stem: 3,275 • Ganga tributaries: 2,414 • Brahmaputra mainstream: 584 • Brahmaputra tributaries: 51 • Beas river: 3 • State-wise Count: • Uttar Pradesh: 2,397 (highest) • Bihar: 2,220 • West Bengal: 815 • Assam: 635 • Jharkhand: 162 • Rajasthan & Madhya Pradesh: 95 • Punjab: 3 ➡️Need for the Census • Gangetic dolphins are slow-growing and inhabit vulnerable ecosystems. • Major threats: • Accidental entanglement in fishing nets • Habitat degradation due to pollution and riverine changes • Poaching for blubber oil (used as catfish bait) • Project Dolphin (2020): Aims to conserve marine and riverine dolphins through multi-stakeholder engagement. ➡️Survey Methodology • Challenges: Dolphins stay underwater, emerge briefly, and leave no biological traces. • Previous estimates: • 2008: ~1,800 dolphins • Recent estimates: 3,500–4,500 dolphins • Dual survey technique: • Visual survey: Two independent observer teams recorded sightings from boats. • Acoustic survey: Hydrophones captured echolocation sounds. • Mathematical analysis: Combined results from both methods for accuracy. ➡️Threats to Gangetic Dolphins 1. Fishing net entanglement: Large-meshed gillnets (nylon/polythene) cause suffocation. 2. Poaching: Opportunistic killing, blubber oil used for catfish bait. 3. Annual mortality: 4%-5% dolphin deaths occur due to fishing nets. 4. Conservation status: Listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List. ➡️This first-ever census provides a baseline for conservation efforts under Project Dolphin, ensuring the long-term survival of India’s national aquatic animal.
