➡️Why in News?
Post-2026 seat freeze expiry and implementation of Women Reservation provisions, discussion on future delimitation and possible increase in Lok Sabha seats has gained relevance.
👉Introduction
Lok Sabha size is linked with representative democracy, federal balance, constituency management, and parliamentary efficiency. Any increase must be viewed institutionally, not politically.
👉Constitutional Basis
🔹Article 81 – Composition of Lok Sabha.
🔹Articles 82 & 170 – Delimitation after Census.
🔹42nd Amendment (1976) – Seat freeze till 2001.
🔹84th & 87th Amendments – Extended freeze till 2026.
👉Significance of Increasing Lok Sabha Seats
1. Better Democratic Representation
🔹Population has grown significantly, while seats remained nearly static.
🔹More MPs can reduce population burden per constituency.
Example: Many constituencies now have over 20 lakh electors.
2. Improved Constituency Service
🔹Smaller constituencies may help MPs address grievances more effectively.
🔹Better outreach in rural, tribal and remote areas.
3. Inclusion of Women & Marginalised Groups
🔹Reservation implementation may require fresh seat restructuring.
🔹Can improve participation of underrepresented groups.
4. Stronger Legislative Inputs
🔹More members can enrich debates, committee participation and policy scrutiny.
👉Challenges
1. Federal Balance Concerns
Seat redistribution based only on population may alter inter-state representation balance.
2. Parliamentary Efficiency
Larger House may need better time management, seating, debate rules and technology.
3. Delimitation Sensitivity
Boundary changes often create administrative and social concerns.
4. Fiscal Cost
Additional expenditure on salaries, staff, infrastructure and logistics.
👉Way Forward
🔹Use objective delimitation criteria with national consensus.
🔹Balance population + development/federal considerations.
🔹Strengthen committee system for effective functioning.
🔹Increase annual sittings of Parliament.
🔹Adopt digital systems for voting and attendance.
👉Conclusion
Expansion of Lok Sabha should be seen as a governance and representation reform, aimed at strengthening democracy, cooperative federalism and effective law-making.
