Find out how, here 🎆
Hi everyone! I’m Dr Shahmir Ali, an Assistant Professor here at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. I’m kicking off a bunch of new research projects and would love to connect with students who might be interested in getting involved — especially those looking for thesis/practicum, first-author publication opportunities, or just looking to get involved in public health research.
Some of my current projects include work with the Healthy Aging and Retirement in Thailand (HART) study, where we're collaborating with the ASEAN Centre for Active Aging and Innovation to better understand how social, behavioral, and caregiving factors shape chronic disease risk and healthy aging. There's lots of potential to get involved in manuscript writing, literature reviews, and/or quantitative analysis using rich longitudinal survey data. I've also been closely analyzing other datasets in the Gateway to Global Aging Data consoritium (https://g2aging.org/home) including CHARLS from China and potentially LASSI from India - keen to work with students on other global analyses on aging datasets as well.
Another project (in collaboration with the University of Exeter) is focused on a systematic review looking at how family engagement strategies can make digital health interventions more inclusive and accessible, with the possibility of follow-up quantitative work.
Beyond that, a number of upcoming projects will focus on non-communicable disease prevention (things like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and potentially cancer), lifestyle behaviors (especially diet!), social and family engagement, and digital health (esp social media)
I’m especially looking for students who are excited to take a more hands-on role (e.g. leading an analysis or paper) and who are keen to build up their research skills through direct involvement. This could be a great opportunity for anyone thinking about a future PhD or graduate studies. Prior experience with academic writing or analysis is definitely helpful but not necessary (as long as you have the will power / effort !) - close mentorship will ofc be provided by yours truly + my (small, but growing!) research team 🤠
If you’re interested or just want to learn more, feel free to drop me an email at sali@nus.edu.sg with a short intro about yourself, your interests, and any relevant experience 😊

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Hi!
We’re offering a research internship at the Metabolic Liver Disease Lab, NUS Medicine, led by Dr. Mark Muthiah and guided by Profs Cheng Han Ng & Nicholas Syn. This is a hands-on opportunity for undergraduate science students interested in cutting-edge metabolic research. You’ll gain practical experience in wet lab techniques such as qPCR, RNA extraction, Western blotting, and cell culture, while contributing to international projects with collaborators from the US, UK, Japan, China, and Korea.
There’s strong potential for co-authorship on publications, conference presentations, and meaningful collaboration with global experts. Notably, both Nicholas Syn and Cheng Han Ng—despite being under 30—are among the Stanford Top 2% Scientists, with a growing reputation in liver disease research. The head of the Lab, Mark Muthiah is a renown physician with over 300 publications in the field.
We’re looking for passionate, detail-oriented, and self-driven students eager to build a future in biomedical and translational research. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
Some Pertaining Information; applications should be:
1. Either in their first / second year of undergraduate science degree OR senior years with interest in PhD
2. Able to commit to a longitudinal project
3. Willing to learn, including writing manuscripts and grants
4. Able to commit time after school activities to lab work
👉 Please send your CV to:
