Belittling and Attacking the Scholars of the Sunnah: A Major Cause of Deviation Shaykh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli حفظه الله And among the causes of deviation is the belittling of the scholars, and indeed it is something that makes one weep. This, O brothers, is a deviation in itself and also a cause of deviation. Among the deviations and their causes is that the youth belittle the scholars of the Sunnah; that the youth belittle the Rabbani scholars who adhere to the Qur'an and Sunnah, who have spent their lives learning the legislative knowledge from its legislative foundations, who have spent their lives in obedience to Allah, glorified and exalted is He. Those who have been testified to by the people of the earth for their obedience and uprightness, and the banners of knowledge and issuing fatwas were established for them. That the youth belittle those scholars and attack them, making them prey for the devils among mankind and jinn, leading them to ruin in terms of doubts and desires. Indeed, you feel sorrow, O servant of Allah, when you see a young person being negligent in obedience to Allah, abandoning obligations, committing prohibitions, and attacking the scholars of the ummah, saying: "We do not want these scholars; they have such and such, or they have such and such. We want those scholars whose speech we do not hear saying: 'This is haram' or 'That is obligatory,' but rather we only hear from them sermons that do not burden us with anything nor oblige us to anything." As for those great scholars whom they call the major scholars, they say: "We have no need for them; they have such and such." And indeed, you are astonished, deeply astonished, and you feel immense sadness when you see a young person upon whom signs of goodness have appeared, the Sunnah is apparent on him, and goodness is evident in his outward actions, yet you see him in gatherings belittling the scholars, attacking the Rabbani scholars, lowering their status, and belittling their importance. And indeed, O brothers, this is a grave deviation and a cause of dangerous deviations. The treatment for this is that the youth should be raised to respect the Rabbani scholars, to take their fatwas, to fulfill their rights, to honour them, to defend their honour, and that preachers and speakers in lectures and elsewhere should avoid anything that distances the youth from the Rabbani scholars of the Ummah, whether with good or bad intent. Sheikh al-Fawzan—may Allah preserve him—said: "It is obligatory to respect the scholars of the Muslims, for they are the inheritors of the prophets. Belittling them is considered a belittling of their status and their inheritance of the Prophet ﷺ and the knowledge they carry. The scholars must be respected for their knowledge, their status in the Ummah, and their responsibility that they undertake for the benefit of Islam and the Muslims." The sheikh—may Allah preserve him—said: "If the scholars are not trusted, then who will be trusted? If trust in the scholars is lost, to whom will the Muslims turn to solve their problems and clarify the legislative rulings? At that point, the Ummah will be lost, and chaos will prevail." And the sheikh has spoken truthfully—may Allah grant him success. And here we are witnessing some of that. We see that many of us have abandoned the fatwas of the reliable scholars and have started chasing after the opinions of people who have nothing of knowledge but crumbs. So we ask Allah to guide us with our correct path and to help us fulfill our duty in returning our people to the good trees of the scholars whose roots are firm and whose branches are in the sky. Shaykh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli حفظه الله Among the ways to attain knowledge and firmly establish it is to act upon that knowledge. Acting upon knowledge is one of the most important means of solidifying it. ʿAli ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Knowledge calls out to action; if action responds, knowledge remains, but if not, it departs.” Knowledge is like a fleeting prey, while action is its binding rope. Whoever acts upon their knowledge secures it and makes it firmly established within themselves. The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, understood this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They would not move on from learning ten verses of the Qur’an until they understood their meanings and acted upon them.
