Instead of addressing these legitimate grievances, the state chose repression. This incident reflects a dangerous pattern in Indonesia: the use of security apparatus not to protect, but to silence. Reports even point to attempts to cover up evidence, including shutting down CCTV in the protest area—normalizing impunity and authoritarian control. The brutality during this protest is allegedly linked to systemic practices: • Excessive use of weapons and armored vehicles against unarmed civilians • The killing of a civilian by a Brimob vehicle, with evidence suppressed • 400+ arbitrary arrests violating the right to peaceful assembly • A culture of impunity where perpetrators are rarely held accountable Indonesia calls itself a democracy, yet when civilians are killed for demanding fair wages and labor justice, it exposes the erosion of democracy and fundamental rights. Police brutality does not bring order—it destroys trust, silences voices, and betrays the very people they are sworn to protect. This tragedy must not be forgotten. The people’s blood cannot be traded for political silence. The demand is clear: Justice for the victims. Accountability for the police. End brutality.
