| 5 | BOX 1.7: THE HISTORICAL MEANINGS OF THE NAME TURK
The name Türk became known to the world with the rise of the Türk Qaghan-ate in the mid-sixth century CE. Importantly, the Türks, who formed the core elements of the Türk Qaghanate, reserved the name Türk for themselves without applying it to all Turkic-speaking nomads of the Eurasian steppes. In turn, the Turkic-speaking Uyghurs and Yenisei Qirghiz, who succeeded the Türks in the Mongolian steppe, did not identify themselves as Türks. As a result, after the collapse of the Türk Qaghanate in the mid-eighth century CE, the name Türk fell out of use in the Mongolian steppe among non-Türk peoples. Türk continued to be used as a self-designation by the Qarakhanid Türks, who were direct descendants of the Western Türks.
The name Turk (whose Arabic plural form is Atrāk) became widely used as a generic name in the Islamic world. Muslim historians and geog-raphers used it virtually as a synonym for Inner Asian nomads, including both Turkic-speaking and non-Turkic-speaking groups. In Transoxiana and Iran during the Mongol and post-Mongol periods, Turk was used as a term relational to Tajik, a term denoting the Persian-speaking sedentary popula-tion, and encompassed Mongol identity. 42 Therefore, the term Turk (in the phrase "Turk and Tajik" and various Chinggisid and Timurid genealogies) contained in the Ilkhanid and Timurid histories and documents primarily denoted the Mongols. Importantly, the name Turk was largely unknown or unused as an endonym in the Qipchaq Steppe during the Mongol and post-Mongol periods. For instance, the Qipchaqs, who were not direct descendants of the Türks, and the Jochid uluses, or peoples such as the Qazaqs and the Crimean Tatars, did not identify themselves as Turks.

| 8 | The Ottoman dynasty had haplogroup R1a-Z93 (Indo-Iranian branch)
Based on descendant testing, it appears most likely that the sultans of the Ottoman dynasty belonged to haplogroup R1a-Z93. This has not been officially confirmed yet. All sultans of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1922) descend in patrilineal line from Osman I, making it one of the longest reigning Y-chromosomal lineage in history.
This suggests that their ancestors were Indo-Iranians who were attracted to the Turks

| 12 | Non-Turkic names and origins in the Ashina, The Oxford source explains why the term Turk is used for many non-Turkic peoples/tribes, and in this case it is clear that the term "Türk"does not indicate race, as stated in the source (at this point, "Türk" ceased to be merely a tribal name and become a political label; gradually, the name would be applied to various peoples who did not stem from actual Türk tribe).

| 18 | Y-DNA HAZARA FROM AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN
SOURCE : | 172 |
| 19 | Contrary to popular belief, the Hazara people have inherited most of their East Asian genetic content from the Mongols rather than the Turks.
The majority of them trace their paternal lineage back to the region's earlier native populations rather than to Turkic or Mongol invaders. However, on average, 65% of Hazaras have East Asian maternal ancestry.
