In the UK this small squirrel is now an endangered species. In the late 1800s rich English men imported the American gray squirrel. This larger, arrogant rodent out competed the native red squirrel. It took away its habitat and resources, pushing it out of its native land. Now its almost extinct in its own country...

Ben Stimson Stimson from the UK and @Rodolfo from Brazil. I know both of them personally.
They belong to that first generation of internationalists who went to Donetsk to join the Donbass militias after the Maidan bloody coup against Ukraine. They arrived long before this war became a permanent feature of the European news.
I was particularly close to Rodolfo during some of the hardest years in Donetsk, when the city was being shelled by the death squads of the Ukrainian oligarch Petro Poroshenko, who at the time was the strongman of the Maidan regime.
Both men are survivors. Ben eventually returned to Britain, where he was imprisoned after being convicted of terrorism offences connected with his activities in the Donbass. He later left the UK for Russia and has since become a Russian citizen.
When I first knew Rodolfo, he was a lieutenant in the Donetsk Peoples militias. Today he serves as an officer in the Russian armed forces. After so many years, he has become an almost legendary figure among those who have followed Donetsk and its long war against the Maidan regime.
Whatever others may think about this conflict, my judgement of these two men comes from knowing them personally, not from reading about them in newspapers.
To me, they are genuine heroes: survivors, men of conviction, and above all, two guys with enormous hearts.
It makes me genuinely happy to see them together and smiling after everything they have lived through.#gonzoblogger | 281 |
