The "Twin Kidnapping Case," which stirred the whole country three years ago, has this day reached a most remarkable turn. Richard Sterling, youngest son of Sir Sterling, after three years' absence, was recovered alive by the police on the night before last. Thus has this strange and melancholy affair been brought, at length, to a conclusion which must afford relief to all who have followed it.
According to the police, the young gentleman was discovered among the ruins of a private charitable institution known as Saint Mary's Children's Home, situated in a poor quarter on the outskirts of the city. The place had, shortly before, been the scene of a terrible explosion and a murderous assault. Upon the arrival of the authorities, all within were found dead save seven-year-old Richard. The child had preserved his life by concealing himself in the cellar. He remained conscious when found and, apart from several slight injuries and some privation, was judged to be in no immediate danger.
Persons acquainted with the affair state that the decisive clue was furnished by an anonymous letter of denunciation. The writer professed knowledge of the lost heir's precise whereabouts and sought to sell that information to Sir Sterling himself for the sum of 5,000 pounds. Subsequent inquiry has identified the informant as a Russian-born man, lately released from prison, who formerly earned his living as a moneylender and go-between for illicit gambling houses. The police entertain strong suspicions that he may have been numbered among the kidnappers of three years past. It is reported that the man has absconded with the money, and the authorities have redoubled their efforts in a search throughout the city.
Sir Sterling has at last been restored to the son for whom he so long grieved, and the sundered family has been granted a reunion of the most affecting character. Sir Sterling and Lady Sterling have declared their intention to defray the full cost of restoring the burned institution and to provide proper compensation to the families of the children who perished in the calamity. They have further expressed their gratitude to the police and to all sections of society for the concern and assistance extended during these many years.
