‎[Not Everyone Who Criticizes Another Is Driven by Envy or Hatred] ‎Al-ʿAllāmah Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (d. 1447 AH) said: ‎“Al-Bukhārī (d. 256 AH) and Muslim (d. 261 AH)—before this—were later followed by al-Dāraqutnī (d. 385 AH), who criticized ḥadīth from them, and Abū ʿAlī al-Jayyānī (d. 498 AH) and others from the imāms criticized what is in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and clarified what they contain of ʿilal (subtle defects), though in most cases correctness is with the two Shaykhs (i.e., al-Bukhārī and Muslim). ‎Yet no battles erupted over this—why? ‎Because they respected people’s intellects, respected the truth, and at the same time held good thoughts about people. ‎They did not think badly of everyone who criticized a person and say, ‘His intent is envy and hatred…’ and the like, as occurs nowadays.” ‎Source: al-Naqd Manhaj Sharʿī (pg. 12) ‎——— ‎Alḥamdulillāh, this excellent work—mentioned as the source—has been translated into English by our teacher Shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik (⁦ @IbnAkhdar⁩). It is especially needed today, when many people dislike being corrected. Some become upset when their preferred speakers are advised or criticized, yet they freely speak against Ahl al-Sunnah with claims of envy, harshness, blind loyalty, weak Qurʾān recitation or Arabic, and even alleged major sins. ‎The contradiction is clear: they avoid criticism for themselves but use it against others—even reacting strongly to the smallest corrections, like simple typos. So what then of matters in creed or methodology?
