| 4 | Hello, I'm J.D. Vance. I was born James David Vance on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. Growing up in a working-class family in the Rust Belt, I experienced firsthand the struggles and challenges that many Americans in similar communities face. My early years were marked by instability and hardship, but they also instilled in me a deep sense of resilience and determination.
After high school, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Iraq, an experience that significantly shaped my perspective on life and leadership. Following my military service, I attended Ohio State University, where I earned a degree in political science and philosophy. Later, I pursued a law degree from Yale Law School, a journey that was both challenging and transformative.
In 2016, I published "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis." The book chronicles my family's story and delves into the broader social and economic issues affecting the white working class in Appalachia. The memoir resonated with many readers and sparked national conversations about the plight of working-class Americans.
Beyond writing, I ventured into the tech industry and became involved in venture capital, focusing on investing in and supporting startups. However, my desire to make a broader impact led me to enter the political arena.
In 2022, I ran for the U.S. Senate in Ohio and won the Republican primary. My campaign and political views are deeply influenced by my personal experiences and my commitment to addressing the challenges faced by many Americans, especially those in the Rust Belt.
Throughout my journey, my goal has been to bridge the gap between different segments of society and to work towards solutions that uplift all Americans.
