As someone who took Econ 101 in college, I was reading this article and suddenly realized something: when we “trade,” we’re not really trading objects we’re trading the rights to use them. That idea led me down a rabbit hole of how property rights actually shape economies, and it was way more interesting (and complicated) than the simple supply-and-demand diagrams we learned. Econ 101 teaches markets as if they work on their own. But in reality, markets only work when the rules of ownership (who can use something, exclude others, or transfer it) are clear, fair, and enforceable.
