Repost from UPSC Ethics 2026
"The life we lead is a story we write with every breath, every tear, and every laugh.
It is not the length of the tale that matters, but the depth of its chapters, the richness of its characters, and the courage of its plot.
To live is to risk, to love, to falter, and to rise again, knowing that each stumble adds weight to the narrative.
Embrace the unknown, for it is in the wilderness of uncertainty that the soul discovers its truest strength"

The Domestic Sphere in India: Current Realities
1. Violence and Inequality
• Persistence of structural violence: NFHS-5 (2019–21) shows nearly 30% of women experience intimate partner violence, yet only 14% report such cases, indicating barriers of stigma, fear, and weak institutional support.
• Dowry deaths: Despite legal safeguards, India continues to witness around 7,000 dowry deaths annually (2017–22)—a stark reminder of patriarchal control over women’s lives within households.
2. Gendered Time Allocation (Time Use Survey, 2024)
• Unpaid domestic services: 93% of women spend an average of 7 hours daily on household work.
• Care responsibilities: 41% of women additionally spend 2.5 hours/day on caregiving.
• Male participation gap: Men spend barely 26 minutes on domestic chores and 16 minutes on caregiving, reflecting entrenched gender norms and unequal division of labour.
3. Invisible yet Critical Contribution
• Economic invisibility: SBI (2023) estimated that if women’s unpaid domestic work were monetised, it would equal 7% of India’s GDP (~₹22.5 lakh crore).
• Undervalued frontline workers: Anganwadi workers, ASHAs, and mid-day meal staff—who sustain health and nutrition outcomes—are still treated as “volunteers” without fair wages, job security, or recognition.
