| 6 | Finally sorted it out, so apparently on dual GPU laptops on reboot the GPUs get assigned specific names every time.
In my case the dedicated GPU is on pci-0000:05:00.0-card and the Integrated AMD GPU is on pci-0000:01:00.0-card... these numbers are addresses that Linux uses to identify my devices and they are permanent. Howver, sometimes on boot 05 gets assigned to the card called card1 sometimes to a card called card0
Often times the number after card could be anything between 0 to 9.
You can never know. Now to the bane of my existence, greetd. greetd is a daemon (process) that runs when the OS boots. It is the greeting screen that boots into your OS and allows you to input your password.
greetd was failing to supply hyprland (my desktop environment) with the correct GPU configurations because the names change so much...
The devices are stored in /etc/dri/by-path/
To fix this you set a custom udev rule (device rule in Linux) that says that 0000:05:00 is the AMD one and the other one is the dedicated one.
Once you do this, it works, however, keep your flashed live boot USB handy, since your main OS may freeze.
Well, the first issue I got with Cachy (I ran into this before on other distros because of Dual GPU). Zorin handled all this automatically, so that's one point to Zorin. But learing this was as fun as it was tiring. Hope you got something from this. | 120 |
