Nanoparticles are not toxic because ___we say they are__... They are toxic because of many weird and wacky phenomenon that occur when you make particles un-naturally small. Namely: the quantum mechanical effect, high surface area, molecular stickiness Many will tell you "not all nano is bad" To be scientifically accurate, this argument has to be debunked in a very nuanced way. Often when teaching new concepts, it is easy to provide blanket statements, and then fill in more complex details as your understanding grows. An argument often used is "we've lived with nanoparticles for thousands of years" Sure we have. Although I guarantee you, our ancestors were not ingesting anywhere near the same amount of nanoparticles we do... e v e r y d a y. Because last I checked, our ancestors weren't intent on producing billions of tons of toxic synthetic nano-monsters in factories every month. One of the main things that makes nano so dangerous is high surface area High surface area occurs in very small particles nano = high surface area = very toxic But high surface area doesn't occur only in nano For example, 1 gram of activated charcoal has a surface area of more than 3,000 square metres. This is why a material doesn't have to be 'nano' to be nano. Nothing against the natural amounts of silica that should be found in foods. Everything against all synthetic silicas, nano & otherwise in all industries, particularly in agriculture. We're all already consuming much more silica than we naturally should
