One of the main things that makes nano so dangerous is high surface area High surface area occurs in very small particles nano = high surface area = very toxic But high surface area doesn't occur only in nano For example, 1 gram of activated charcoal has a surface area of more than 3,000 square metres. This is why a material doesn't have to be 'nano' to be nano.
