💭Imagine you are playing catch with a friend of yours. Your friend throws the ball at you and you immediately know where to position your hands to catch the ball safely. Now imagine hearing a movie title or a song and recognizing that it is your favorite. Finally, imagine touching a hot surface and quickly pulling your hands away. How did your brain quickly make these decisions? How did the information get from your sensory organs to your brain and back to the organs? The answer is what we will discuss today, Neurons!
🧱Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system. They receive and transmit signals to different parts of the body. There are different kinds of neurons. Sensory neurons are the ones that transmit signals from organs to brains while motor neurons transmit signals from the brain to organs. Interneurons transmit information between different neurons in the body.
Neurons have three different parts(see diagram below):
Soma (cell body) — this portion of the neuron receives information. It contains the cell’s nucleus.
Dendrites — these thin filaments carry information from other neurons to the soma. They are the “input” part of the cell.
Axon — this long projection carries information from the soma and sends it off to other cells. This is the “output” part of the cell. It normally ends with a number of synapses(gap between neurons) connecting to the dendrites of other neurons.
⬇️Let’s dive deeper into how neurons work and use their parts to transmit information.⬇️
Neurons transmit information from the brain or sensory organs into electrical signals called action potentials or nerve impulses. These action potentials are created when the neuron receives sufficient stimuli. These stimuli add up until they exceed a certain threshold, which triggers the neuron to send an impulse along the axon, creating an action potential.
📝A step by step break down of the process can be explain as below:
Getting Excited: When a neuron receives a signal from another neuron, it can become "excited." This means that tiny particles called ions move in and out of the neuron, creating a change in electrical charge. If the signal is strong enough, this excitement leads to an action potential.
Sending the Signal: The action potential is like a wave of electricity that travels along the neuron’s long tail, called the axon. This wave moves quickly, allowing the neuron to send signals over long distances.
Passing the Message: When the action potential reaches the end of the axon, it triggers the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters(examples are dopamine or serotonin). These chemicals jump across a tiny gap (called a synapse) to the next neuron, facilitating communication.
Receiving the Message: The receiving neuron has special sites on its surface, like little locks, where the neurotransmitters fit. When they bind to these sites, they can either get the next neuron excited (which may start a new action potential) or calm it down, depending on the type of neurotransmitter.
🧠The brain constantly makes sense of the pattern, frequency and area of origin of the incoming nerve impulses in order to interpret them, and then responds by making appropriate commands to the relevant body parts.
✍In summary, neurons are the essential building blocks of our nervous system, enabling us to interact with the world around us through rapid communication. From catching a ball to feeling pain, these remarkable cells facilitate our every response and action. Understanding how neurons transmit signals not only illuminates the intricate workings of our bodies but also highlights the marvel of human experience. As we continue to explore the fascinating world of neuroscience, consider how these tiny cells play a monumental role in shaping our thoughts, feelings, and actions.
🙏Thank you for joining us today, and we look forward to diving deeper into the wonders of the brain next week!
