Firstly, why are we building humanoid robots?
Look around: our physical world is designed specifically for human interaction, based on our form. If humans had a different shape, our world would look radically different.
For as long as we live in our biological bodies and engage in everyday tasks like grabbing coffee or using tools, the humanoid form remains the ideal design. Thus, this is the form you want your general-purpose robot to emulate.
For this reason, we believe the human form is the optimal choice for a general-interface robot.
This robot will not be the best at any specific task, but it was learn and reason about millions of tasks. This is important, as building any robot and AI data-engine is challenging, so it's wise to focus your resources on a general interface.
A robot with legs, arms, and hands can perform human-like tasks without needing to alter the environment. This is crucial, as remodeling the entire physical world is an insurmountable challenge (and company's are averse to altering their workplace).
In this context, the human body is akin to a keyboard/mouse for the internet - it's our universal way for interacting with the physical world.
Human-like capabilities open up applications across commercial sectors, at-home as every human will own a humanoid, and even helping to colonize space.
In the commercial realm, we're witnessing unprecedented labor shortages. In sectors we focus on in Warehousing and Manufacturing, annual turnover rates range from 50-150%. These industries are struggling to find/retain talent and scale their workforces.
What's the biggest challenge we've faced in building Humanoid Robots?
The lack of a mature supply chain. This has been a significant obstacle.
We've had to design the entire robot from scratch: actuators, electronics, structures, joints, operating system, controls, firmware, AI systems, etc. Not only that, but we now need on-site support for integration, testing, and maintenance of all software, electronics, and hardware.
This lack of supply chain continues to surprise me and could be an opportunity for future entrepreneurs.
Given this burden, we have an internal motto at Figure: "the only way out is through."
The Figure team is striving to demonstrate a fully autonomous system – where a button click or voice command results in continuous, uninterrupted work.
Building the robot system is just the beginning. The AI/software is now our primary bottleneck in entering the commercial market. Hence, Figure is ultimately an AI-first company.
