Powell said the U.S. job market is losing momentum, showing clear signs of slowing and increasing risks to employment.
He warned the economy is being pulled between weak growth, labor risks, and stubborn inflation, making policymaking more challenging.
Powell also noted that inflation progress remains uncertain, and the Fed still needs βgreater confidenceβ before cutting rates.
He cautioned that parts of the economy show stagflation like pressures, and even said U.S. stocks look βfairly highly valued.β
Donald Trump has signed a funding bill to reopen the U.S. federal government after a 43 day shutdown, the longest in U.S. history.
The bill is a short term fix, funding most government operations until January 30, 2026, while bigger issues like Affordable Care Act subsidies remain unresolved.
Trump stated that βthis is not the way to run a countryβ and insisted the government must not shut down again.
