Most people live under the impression that they must first put their material affairs in order before they can devote themselves to a spiritual life. They tell themselves: “First I need a profession, then I will marry, raise children, and that will keep me occupied for many years. But afterwards, I will finally be free to devote myself to the spiritual life.” What they fail to realize is that this way of thinking is a cleverly laid trap of their lower nature, which seeks to keep them away for as long as possible from the one thing that can truly help them. If you wait until all your other affairs are settled before beginning the spiritual life, you will never begin at all. Material affairs are never completely settled. Unexpected circumstances constantly arise, demanding our attention and requiring us to put things in order. So the spiritual life must begin regardless of the state of our material circumstances. Why?
