👉This may be the most beautiful opera house in the world. 👉The Margravial Opera House of Bayreuth, Germany, is one of the very few remaining Baroque opera houses in Europe. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that it's entirely made of wood, which is the best option for perfect acoustics. This outstanding masterpiece has been a UNESCO site since 2012. @museum 🕋

When Pope Pius VII (r. 1800-23) embarked on an ambitious extension project in 1817 to expand the Chiaramonti Museum in the Vatican, he turned to architect Raffaele Stern (1774-1820) to design the New Wing, the "Braccio Nuovo." The splendid New Wing, 68 meters long and with a coffered ceiling, was conceived as a sculpture gallery to house Classical sculpture and works of art, notably those confiscated by Napoleon, which were returned after the fall of the Emperor in 1815. The arrangement of the sculpture was overseen by Antonio Canova, together with Filippo Aurelio Visconti and Antonio d'Este; they positioned the colossal statue of the Nile (found in Campo Marzio in 1513) in the middle, facing a portrait of the Pope by Canova himself. #vatican @museum 🕋

When the Vatican Museums fall silent and the only visitor is the setting sun, it's as if they're filled with a mysterious atmosphere, where anything seems possible. Out of the corner of your eye, you'd swear you saw a statue moving. The song of swallows, the distant footsteps of a guard, the lapping of a fountain, the bells of St. Peter's - the galleries are not nearly as empty as they seem. How wonderful to let your imagination run wild in such a setting. @museum 🕋
