But hear me out before saying it's not true. Every single August for some reason, my life feels like a very dark place. At least for the past few years I've been feeling that. Maybe it is the end of winter or days being shorter, but undeniably every August I sort of go into some level of grief. And as August starts to end, the feeling and everything goes away together. | 11 | i think i’ve had body dysmorphia since i was 13 and never had a word for it until recently.
i was always “the fat one” in my family growing up. in high school i actually did gain weight, bad diet, too much stress. and every time i came home or saw relatives there’d be a comment about it. even the “positive” ones like oh you look healthier now still made me feel like shit, because it meant they noticed, it meant it was a topic. i started skipping birthdays. i’d straight up refuse to go to family functions just to avoid it.
last year i finally got the courage to start going to the gym. i was scared honestly, kept thinking what if i overeat, what if i lose control. hired a pt i couldn’t really afford because i needed the guidance those first few months.
now i track calories and go consistently. lifting heavy actually makes me feel good after, like genuinely addicted to that feeling of endorphins.
but the body dysmorphia never left. i can be making real progress and still feel like i’m bigger than i actually am for no reason. it doesn’t care about the numbers or the mirror.

| 19 | You guys keep asking me what it's actually like being a student in Sydney, so I collected the most common questions and answered them all in one post. Here we go! 👇
"Is Sydney really that multicultural?"
Yes, and it's my favourite thing about this city. Almost half of Sydney's population was born overseas, so as an international student you never feel like an outsider. On campus I hear five different languages before my first lecture, and you can find food from every corner of the world — Korean, Lebanese, Thai, Italian... and yes, even a decent plov if you know where to look 😄
"How's the weather?"
Honestly? A dream. Winters are mild which means no frozen mornings, no heavy coats. Summers mean beach weather for months. Just remember the seasons are flipped: New Year happens in summer, and you'll be sitting exams in 30°C heat in February. Takes some getting used to!
"What do students do for fun?"
Beach days at Bondi and Coogee, coastal walks with insane ocean views, barbecues in the park (Aussies are obsessed with BBQs), and uni societies for literally every hobby, from coding clubs to cheese appreciation, I'm not joking. Work-life balance is a real cultural value here, and it's contagious.
"Are Australians friendly?"
Very. Everything is casual professors go by first names, strangers chat with you at bus stops, and "no worries" is the national motto. It took me a while to get used to how relaxed everyone is, and now I love it.
"What surprised you the most?"
How early everything closes! Many shops shut around 5-6pm. Also: the birds. Magpies will genuinely dive at you in spring (google "swooping season" it's a real thing), and giant white cockatoos scream outside your window like it's normal. 🦜
"Any downsides?"
The cost of living ofc. Sydney is expensive, and rent takes the biggest bite. Budgeting, cooking at home, and sharing accommodation are survival skills here. Also, being far from family is hard; the flights home are long and pricey. But the experience? Worth every bit of it. | 1 284 |

I just finished my second year of Computer Science at the University of Sydney, and I keep thinking about the opportunity that made it all possible.
The El-Yurt Umidi Foundation — "Hope of the Nation" — is Uzbekistan's government scholarship that sends young Uzbeks to the world's top universities, covering tuition and living costs so we can bring that knowledge back home.
Being an EYUF scholar feels like both a gift and a responsibility. My country invested in me, and that's not pressure — it's motivation. Every lecture, every late night in the library, I remind myself why I'm here.
To be honest, it's not always easy. Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and the stipend doesn't always stretch as far as you'd hope. Budgeting has become a serious skill of mine 😅 — cooking at home, sharing accommodation, hunting student discounts. It's challenging, but it's taught me discipline and independence.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. To every young person in Uzbekistan dreaming of studying abroad: apply. EYUF changed my life, and it could change yours too.
