Alexithymia (emotional blindness) - اللامُفرداتية "lack of words for emotion." It is estimated that 1 in 10 people has alexithymia, but it is much more common in those with depression and in autistic people. 1 in 5 autistic people have alexithymia. Alexithymia seems to be a common feature of neurological disease, with most evidence available for patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, Parkinson disease , Alzhimer disease and epilepsy. Also it’s common in patients with anxiety disorder and depression.

Foucault called it the "medical gaze." It is the way the doctor looks at a patient and only focuses on the relevant "biomedical" information, discarding anything else that is personal or human about the patient. The medical gaze is what turns the patient into a case. The medical gaze serves a very important role to find a diagnosis and cure the patient. But it serves very little in the communication with that very patient (especially the chronically-ill, those who must live the rest of their life without a cure). In such patients especially, a more humane and social approach is much more important.

Medical school The worst part about it Or should I call it "the dark side"? Beside got you anxious, depressed, and self-doubting.. When you get used to others suffering . Normal words like " I'm in pain " turns tragically to a " diagnosis". And anytime you see a person, you seek for their medical signs. Someone is pale (maybe he has anemia .. which type? Iron deficiency ? nah unlikely at this age...). A few years after, people became nothing but" cases " you will unintentionally mask their pain and everything you see is not an enough stimulus for you to empathize with and I can assure that the process is quite tragic. The only thing I could say .. not everything here should be related to your exam scores There is interpersonal skills that unfortunately you do not really learn. Try not to lose your heart during this hard long journey. Save your empathy Because that's what makes us homo-sapiens .

نحن الوحيدون .. الهائمون داخل عقولنا في متاهة أبدية .. بحثاً عن مخرج من كل هذا .. نحن الذين لا نعرف صديقاً قوياً بما يكفي لسبر أغوارنا العميقة .. نحن الذين نشعر بالوحدة في زحام القطيع .. نؤمن بالسعي الفردي الخالص الذي مهما تقاطع مع ملايين الأشخاص يعود طواعية إلى ذاته . . نحن الذين يطفئنا الضجيج . . و ترهقنا الجموع .. ونتعب من مسايرة الحوارات المملة ذاتها .. ونجوع للانتصارات الداخلية الكبرى .. ونأنس بصخب أفكارنا بينما نرتدي الخشوع على الملأ .. نحن أصحاب الحدائق السرية التي لم يدخلها أحد .. وقد لا يعرفها أحد على وجه الإطلاق .. لأن أكثر الحدائق بهجة وأكثر الشواطئ خلوداً تلك التي لم تلوثها قدم إنسان .. راضون نحن بعزلتنا خالص الرضا .. لا ترعبنا مواجهة ذواتنا المشككة في كل شيء .. ولا يخيفنا خلع ملايين القشور الزائفة التي يحاول الآخرون طمسنا بها لتحسين مذاق شخصياتنا .. لعل هذا العالم يستسيغنا .. نحن اللاذعون . . الخاملون في حلبات الفوضى والنزاع . . البارعون في تحليل الحياة من على أرصفة الهامش .. آه .. كم هو لذيذ أن تكون على الهامش . . غير مرئي .. غير محاسب على آرائك . . غير مطالب بالتبرير والشجب والاستنكار .. غير مدان بما تظنه أو تعرفه ... نحن الأحاديون كأفضل ما تكون الوحدة .. لماذا لم يفهم أحد المهمة الإنسانية العظيمة التي نحاول القيام بها بكفاءة مطلقة .. ها نحن . بكل إخلاص .. نمد جذورنا البشرية بكل قوة إلى .. الداخل .. نعوض بالجذور كل الكائنات القشرية التي خلفها الفراغ . . تلك التي جعلت وجودنا البشري مهدداً بالهشاشة واللامعنى -أمل السهلاوي
