π» From water gas (Bosch process): this reaction process takes place in two(2) steps;
Step I: steam is passed over red-hot coke(carbon) at about 1200β°C, a mixture of carbon (II) oxide & hydrogen [known as water gas] is formed. This step of the reaction is endothermic as a large amount of heat energy is required for the reaction.
Step II: excess steam is then mixed with water gas and passed over a catalyst at about 450β°C. The catalyst may either be [ iron (III) oxide or chromium (III) oxide ]. More hydrogen is formed from this step and the reaction is exothermic at this step. | 576 |

The three methods commonly used for the preparation of hydrogen in the laboratory are as follows;
π» Action of Zinc on an acid: dilute HCl or HβSOβ attacks metallic zinc with the liberation of hydrogen gas. No heating is necessary
Zn + 2HCl ---> ZnClβ + Hβ
π» Action of sodium on cold water: sodium pieces when added to water liberates hydrogen. The water must be cold because the reaction is vigorous. Sodium is used instead of potassium (which is more reactive) to prevent explosions
2Na + 2HβO ---> 2NaOH + Hβ
π» Action of iron on steam: iron when red hot liberates hydrogen from steam. The reaction is reversible & iron (II) diiron (III) oxide [FeβOβ] is liberated at the same time.
3Fe + 4HβO ---> FeβOβ + 4Hβ | 431 |

Hydrogen is naturally found in the gaseous state in air, combined state in water and the earth crust.

It has 1 proton, 1 electron and 0 neutrons.
π It has oxidation state of +1 in most compounds except hydrides where it's oxidation state is -1
π Hydrogen was discovered by a scientist called Cavendish, however; it was named "hydrogen" by another scientist called Lavoisier
(He called the gas hydrogen because it burns in oxygen to form water; hence; water former)
π Lastly, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe

π transition metals may be defined as an element with partially filled d orbitals
πthe first series is found in period 4 ,the atoms of these metals have one or two electron in the 4s orbital and partially filled 3d orbital
π transition metals have few properties in common with the s block metals but they are remarkably similar among themselves
πin the transition metals the 3d and 4s electron contribute to the metallic bonding in the crystal lattice of the metals .this makes them stronger and harder with higher melting points than the s block metals
