While most are familiar with the core Ge'ez block, the Unicode standard actually includes four additional extensions (Supplement, Extended, Extended-A, and Extended-B). These 160+ unique characters are absolutely vital for supporting regional orthographies and minority languages like Sebatbeit, Me'en, Blin, and Gumuz.
I put together a quick guide breaking down these extended blocks and the specific languages they support. Expanding our glyph sets ensures true digital inclusion for these rich cultures.

| 12 |  As I’ve mentioned before, me and @type_habesha are working on a paper studying the effects typefaces have on political perception. A major part of the paper is the survey results, so we’ve prepared an anonymous survey with both English and Amharic variants showcasing different types of Ethiopic fonts.

Yigezu Bisrat: The Father of Ethiopian Type Design
Ato Yigezu Bisrat fundamentally reshaped the visual landscape of the Ge'ez script. A graduate of the historic Kine Tibeb School and the official calligrapher to Emperor Haile Selassie I, he pioneered the transition of Ethiopian letterforms from traditional manuscript parchment into systematic, modern typography. Through his landmark 1958 E.C. publication, Ethiopian Typography in Gothic and Decorative Styles, he codified structural design rules for Ge'ez and introduced enduring aesthetic classics, notably the angular "Gothic" and the ornate "Goffer" (ጎፈር) styles.
Today, Bisrat’s groundbreaking work remains the bedrock of modern Ethiopic typography and graphic design. By bridging centuries-old scribal traditions with the demands of modern printing and display, he set the standard for formal certificates, ceremonial documents, and publishing across Ethiopia. His visual systems laid the direct foundation for the digital Ethiopic typefaces used across screens and print today, serving as a lasting testament to how cultural heritage can be preserved and elevated through forward-thinking design.

Today, we use italic to add emphasis, but wher italic type debuted in 1501, that wasn't the goal at all.
Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, working with punchcutter Francesco Griffo, introduced italic for a practical reason: fit more words on each page. The narrower letterforms made it possible to print smaller, more affordable books that people could actually carry with them.
What started as a space-saving innovatior eventually became one of typography's mosi recognizable tools for emphasis.
