#LIFE_LESSONS The Zakat of Knowledge Is to Teach and Share It

Sheikh Dagash Al-Ajmi hafidhahullah said:

"Do not run away from teaching. Unfortunately, some students of knowledge flee and say, “By Allah, I am not qualified to teach.” Who told you that you must become a mufti? Did anyone ask you to compile nine volumes on a legal issue? No, my brother. What is required of you is: “Convey from me, even if it is one verse.” That is what is required of you. Perhaps Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will place blessing in your words, and a small student among your students may benefit and become an imam among the imams of religion. And the reason for that could be a single word you said. Do you know the story of Sahih Al-Bukhari? It began as a wish that Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, may Allah have mercy on him, used to have. He said: “If only a man would compile the authentic hadiths into a single book.” It was just a wish. Among those present was Muhammad ibn Ismail Al-Bukhari. That wish came to his mind, so he compiled that collection, gathering it from thousands of hadiths that he narrated. He authored Sahih Al-Bukhari, which even today has more editions, explanations, clarifications, and readings than any other book in Islamic literature. The reason was the wish of his teacher. Perhaps you say, “By Allah, I am not a scholar.” What is required from you is only to convey what you know. You are not required to give fatwas, or to put yourself forward for issuing legal rulings, or to appear on TV channels, or anything like that. You only convey what you know. What do you know? Convey it. Have you studied and memorised the Forty Hadith of An-Nawawi and learned its explanation? My brother, teach it. Teach it to those who need it—either in your school if you are a teacher, or in a Qur’an institute if you teach there, or in a masjid if you are an imam, or among your brothers when you review knowledge together. Even if you are not distinguished or anything like that, you can say: “What do you think if we read the explanation of such-and-such scholar on the Forty Hadith or on Kitab At-Tawhid?” We have some knowledge, but we need someone to remind us, to revive this knowledge in our hearts, and to repeat it so we do not forget it. Knowledge must be spread. Unfortunately, some students of knowledge study Islamic law for years, and some go to foreign universities and study with scholars and teachers, then return to their country and sleep, sit comfortably, and that is the end of it. They say, “I do not want to fall into showing off (riya). I do not want to put myself forward.” My brother, this is not “putting yourself forward.” This is conveying the religion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. “Convey from me, even if it is one verse.” This is what is required of you. You studied for years in Islamic law. What did you study? You studied Sharia: creed, fiqh, hadith, and tafsir. Convey the religion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Otherwise, you will be held accountable for it, just as the owner of wealth is held accountable if he does not pay its zakat.
