A few days ago, we explored the #OwnVoices movement through Zoë Marriott’s deeply personal account of writing The Moonlit Maze — and the unexpected journey of recognising her own autistic experience in her fiction.
Today, we’re looking at the movement from a rather different angle. Our new exam task is based on a survey of US librarians and explores how familiar they are with #OwnVoices, as well as the challenges they face when trying to identify suitable books.
So, if you’ve read our previous article, this is a chance to revisit the topic from a more research-based perspective — and put your English to the test at the same time.

| 4 | I came across yet another article I immediately wanted to share it with you. It’s about #OwnVoices — a term originally coined by YA author Corinne Duyvis for stories in which characters share an identity or experience of marginalisation with their author. As someone with ADHD, I was instantly hooked.
Zoë Marriott’s, the author of the article, explores what #OwnVoices can look like throgh her own experience writing The Moonlit Maze. She initially struggled with one of her protagonists, only to realise that the character’s behaviours and experiences were uncomfortably familiar — because she had unknowingly been writing the character as autistic, while simultenuously coming to recognise her own autism.
It’s a lovely reflection on one of the strangest things about writing (and, in my opinion, reading, too): sometimes the characters we struggle with most are the ones who are telling us something about ourselves.

| 7 | Hello, language enthusiasts!
Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we have to cancel today’s webinar.
I got stuck in the mountains and won’t be able to make it back in time for our scheduled meeting. But rest assured: as soon as my feet touch the ground of civilization again, I’ll record the workshop and publish it both on VK and here.
I’m extremely sad that I won’t have the opportunity to see you all live today. But this is certainly not our last meeting, so may we meet again soon!
And may English be with you. | 733 |

| 14 | Today, we’re happy to share a review of our course from one of our graduates, Alice.
Recently, she sat her C2 Proficiency exam in Yerevan, and now, after 10 months of rigorous study, she is the proud owner of a CPE certificate with Grade A.
Alice, thank you so much for choosing us. Your journey to CPE has been truly inspiring - overcoming challenges, pushing your limits, and constantly reaching new heights.
It’s the small things along the way that I remember most. Once, you said, “In the past, Expert seemed difficult, but not anymore.” Another time, it was, “It used to take me hours to prepare a monologue, but now I can do it impromptu.”
These are exactly the moments that make our work with students so rewarding.
Thank you for your kind words, for your trust, and for being with us throughout this journey. We hope to see you again on one of our future courses.
May English be with you!
Alice:
