First of all - stop assuming that everyone is better than you just because they are older. I've been conducting dozens of job interviews last year - and most applicants were idiots (seriously - some of them could not explain to me what is network mask and why it's needed). And this was not junior position - we were searching for senior information security specialist. So the person with OSCP would get a lot of credit from me - meaning don't get discouraged by one failure on the job interview. Probably the hiring manager did not want to hire someone smarter than he is. And secondly - if you really into research I'd recommend you to skip pentester position and look for information security researcher or malware analyst position - that's where you get to do the actual research, disassembling and all the fun. Pentesters often end up running automated tools and writing the reports based on that just because of the time constraints of the project. A netmask is a 32-bit mask used to divide an IP address into subnets and specify the network's available hosts. In a netmask, two bits are always automatically assigned. For example, in 255.255.225.0, "0" is the assigned network address. In 255.255.255.255, "255" is the assigned broadcast address. It is called a subnet mask because it is used to identify network address of an IP address by performing a bitwise AND operation on the netmask. A Subnet mask is a 32-bit number that masks an IP address, and divides the IP address into network address and host address.
