Clara Belle Williams wasn’t allowed inside the classroom—so she stood in the hallway, day after day, refusing to give up. In 1928, as a Black woman at a segregated New Mexico college, she was denied a seat among white students. But Clara stood her ground—literally—listening through doorways, scribbling notes in the corridor. Nine years later, at age 51, she became the university’s first Black graduate. By day she taught Black schoolchildren. By night, she taught formerly enslaved adults to read. All three of her sons became doctors—her legacy in motion. She lived to be 108. The same school that once kept her outside now bears her name.
