🥹 Bithumb freezes accounts after glitch accidentally deposits $43B worth of Bitcoin
In February, South Korea's Bithumb exchange rolled out a promotional event that took a sudden turn due to a technical glitch. Instead of distributing rewards in Korean won (KRW), the system mistakenly credited users with Bitcoin—placing around 62,000 BTC into various accounts. At current market rates, that’s roughly $43 billion.
While most users reported the error and quickly returned the funds, Bithumb is now taking legal action against those who didn’t cooperate. The exchange has begun freezing accounts of individuals refusing to comply.
So far, a court has approved the seizure of 7 BTC—valued at approximately $496,000—directly tied to the incident.
