9 May is celebrated in Russia and other former Soviet countries as Victory Day, marking the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. However, behind this victory, there is also a dark side that is often silenced: during the Soviet occupation of Germany, especially in Berlin, hundreds of thousands of German women were victims of rape by Red Army soldiers. Historical estimates put the number of victims as high as two million, with reports of systematic sexual violence and brutality often ignored or denied for decades.
