I love this as another example in literature of how poetry and prose are contrasted to make a point, in this case the dichotomy of the Baggins and Took aspects of Bilbo's nature.
Sometimes I read classics for the pure experience of them, and sometimes I enjoy a more in-depth study. I'm currently listening to The Tolkien Professor podcast Hobbit series lectures as I re-read the book, which is letting me see additional connections and insights this go-around. I'm making a note that this would be fun to do with my older kids as a literature study. | 463 |

| 6 |  +2It's truly inspiring what a group of hard-working, dedicated men can accomplish in a day. Our work day saw pipes repaired, trees trimmed and burned, two dump trucks worth of dirt distributed across garden beds, and posts put in for eventual trellises. It was also a community event that included over a dozen kids playing field games (from egg runs to water balloon tosses), treehouse adventures, and nerf gun wars. In addition to our local Patriot Front crew, we were joined by friends, family members, and neighbors. From the morning starting with donuts and Above Time Coffee (brewed by everyone's favorite coffee gal, Sarah Dye herself) to the evening concluding with a viewing of Once Upon a Time in Minnesota (Lord Wolfshield's latest psychological thriller), it was a wonderful day from start to finish. James and I can't express how grateful we are to be a part of such a supportive, genuinely lovely community. | 8 |  Because we are liberal with our breaks throughout the year, often choosing to prioritize family time and life experiences over book work, we don't take a two-month long 'summer break.' That doesn't mean schoolwork looks the same in summer, though. Right now, kids do a math lesson and free reading on their own, and we're doing a literary unit. We are going through the play, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, and doing an accompanying literary analysis. Later this week, we'll be attending a live performance of the play. Summer is a great time to mix things up and try something fun and different. It's a break without completely letting everything go. | 896 |

Happy Muffin Monday!! My kids have learned that alliteration is an easy way to get me to do something regularly. π Muffin Monday started with pumpkin spice muffins last fall. | 20 | Beauty is the oft undervalued step child of the transcendentals (truth, goodness, and beauty). When I was new to homeschooling, attempting to cultivate a love of beauty in my own children, I regularly had the experience of finding myself hurriedly guiding them away from certain "art" while awkwardly trying to field questions on why that would be considered art. A resource I found helpful in my own understanding of art was the 2009 BBC documentary "Why Beauty Matters" by Roger Scruton. (Because of its overt valuing of beauty, it has since been banned on YouTube and taken down from the BBC website, but you can find it on Odysee, like this posting.)
I recently attended the NOVA Arts and Culture event (Carson and the NOVA crew put on a wonderful event, and it was fantastic seeing the arts getting some love). Carson gave a great talk exploring the idea that the political seeks explicit influence while the artistic seeks implicit influence; they are different, but both have vital and complimentary roles, and both should be valued accordingly. In his talk, he brought up Roger Scruton's documentary. The reminder resulted in me re-watching it, this time with my older kids as part of Art Appreciation in our homeschool. If you, like me, have older kids and could benefit from a traditional perspective on beauty and how that conflicts with modern art, this has generated some insightful discussions with my older kids. (Just be aware, it contains images of some degenerate modern art that you may not want to show younger kids.) | 987 |
