Trade is still incredibly reliant on paper and that has remained unchanged for centuries. Itâs estimated that there are an average of 28.5 billion trade documents1 printed and flown around the world every day. Thatâs a staggering number.
As those involved in trade may have experienced, in many cases goods arrive at their destination before the documentation has. For example, while transit periods between Singapore and Bangladesh might take 5 days, the legal documentation that acts as proof of ownership of those goods can take 10 days when financing or risk mitigation is needed.
There are workarounds in place to authorise the release of the goods, but this is just that â a workaround â itâs cumbersome and involves additional cost. If there isnât a workaround, then the goods just sit there until the paperwork arrives.

HSBC pioneers Quantum protection for AI-powered FX trading
HSBC has become the first bank to pioneer quantum protection for AI-powered foreign exchange trading. As one of the worldâs largest foreign exchange providers1, HSBC is leading the way in exploring how quantum cryptography can safeguard highly sensitive trading data against possible cyber threats as powerful as future quantum attacks.
In a world-first trial, HSBC armed its award-winning HSBC AI Markets2(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window)(opens in new window) 2 trading terminal with unprecedented quantum protection, using Quantum Key Distribution3 to safeguard a âŹ30 million trading scenario from Euros to US dollars. As this technology matures into a commercially accessible and globally scalable solution, HSBC has proven it will have the power to safeguard trades of any value from quantum attacks.
CEO of HSBC Bank Plc and HSBC Europe, Colin Bell, said:
âThe quantum revolution is not on the horizon; itâs already here. By investing and experimenting in quantum technologies now, HSBC is not just preparing for the future; weâre shaping it.
âTodayâs trials will define tomorrowâs triumphs. Successfully pioneering quantum protection for our FX trading is a significant step with far-reaching implications for the blueprint of our future cybersecurity.
âWe are determined to do whatever we can to protect our customers assets, both now and in the future. This trial marks an important step in this commitmentâ.
With this milestone, powered by BT, Toshiba and Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology, HSBC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to staying ahead of the technological curve and ensuring the utmost protection for its customersâ and clientsâ assets in the quantum era.

Our values in detail
We value difference
We were born speaking different languages. We were founded on the strength of different experiences, attributes and voices; they are integral to who we are and how we work.
The greater our empathy and diversity, the better we reflect the worlds of our customers and communities â and the better we can serve them.
So we champion inclusivity. We listen. We remove barriers. And we seek out views different from our own.
We succeed together
We offer our customers a unique breadth of opportunity.
And we can only deliver the full promise of this by being truly connected â across boundaries. With our customers and partners. Together as colleagues and as an organisation.
So, we collaborate across boundaries. We break down silos. We trust and support each other. And, when necessary, get out of each otherâs way.
Together, we make possible what we cannot do alone. We take responsibility
What we do has a real impact on peopleâs lives, communities and the planet. We take this responsibility seriously.
We set ourselves high standards and are each accountable for our actions. We always use good judgement. And if something doesnât feel right, as colleagues we speak up and act.
We build for tomorrow, today. We succeed only by taking the long view, by focusing on the sustainable interests of our customers, investors, and the planet we all share.
We get it done
We create value for our customers and investors by always moving forward and making things happen.
Weâre entrepreneurial: we try new things, we learn and improve, and we take smart risks.
Weâre dynamic: we reject mediocrity. We move at pace.
Weâre decisive: we make clear choices and take bold actions.
And we keep our word: we always do what we promise.
