Since taking off in 1985, Emirates has carried over 700 million passengers—and not one has died in a crash.
In an industry where mechanical failures, weather events, or simple human error can spiral into catastrophe, that’s no small feat. The airline, based in Dubai, runs one of the largest all-widebody fleets in the world, packed with Boeing 777s, Airbus A380s, and now the A350s. What it doesn’t have? A single fatality involving a passenger.
That stat held even during its worst moment: Flight EK521 in 2016, when a Boeing 777 crash-landed and exploded into flames in Dubai. All 300 people onboard got out alive. Only a firefighter, tragically, lost his life battling the blaze.
So how has Emirates kept its record clean? Analysts point to obsessive maintenance, one of the youngest fleets in aviation, and a massive in-house training and engineering complex that churns out highly skilled pilots and ground crews.
The airline also avoids risky short-haul ops, sticking mostly to long-haul sectors where safety margins are wider. Some call it luck—but Emirates calls it policy.

Those were among the final words from PSA Flight 182 before it slammed into a San Diego neighborhood on September 25, 1978. The Boeing 727 collided mid-air with a Cessna 172, killing all 144 people on both aircraft—and seven more on the ground.
The PSA crew had spotted the Cessna moments earlier but lost track of it. They assumed it had cleared. Air traffic control had no idea the two planes were on a fatal path.
Seconds later, the 727’s wing sliced the smaller plane in half. Both aircraft disintegrated, raining debris and fire onto homes in North Park.
The crash was a wake-up call for the aviation world. See-and-avoid protocols weren’t enough. Neither was controller clearance. In the years that followed, this disaster helped accelerate the adoption of collision avoidance systems still in use today. | 659 |
