Something that I love about australia is you pay bills weekly and earn a payslip weekly. I transitioned to a weekly billing cycle in my first few years as an online PT. So for those of you charging say £100 a week, their mortgage may be £400. So they see 100 next to 400 and think fuck me that's a lot. If you charged 25 a week, they may compare that to their weekly fish and chip shop purchase and think "if i sack off the fish n chips I can afford a PT" Be savvy with the way you select your pricing. I cover pricing in a lot of detail in my two upcoming talks in Melbourne (22nd april) and Brighton. For more info email me at james@jamessmithacademy.com

Imposter syndrome, hits us all, right? Well, it's pretty normal I'll tell you that. There have been many days in the last 9 years I've felt like a complete fraud. What did I do before PT, well I worked in recruitment and I fucking hated it. So all I did was pose myself with a question. "James what would you rather be, a fraudster or a recruiter?" I'm not going back to my old job, you shouldn't either, so do the fucking thing you need to. Or go back to your old job you hate, pussy. 😂

It's important you think about the difference between a SERVICE and a PRODUCT. Your PT is a service, you may create a product like a 6 week program you sell for a fraction of your hourly rate. YOU CAN DISCOUNT A PRODUCT, but you should never discount a service. Also, long term it's good to think about your business, is it a puppy or a baby? A puppy business needs you there every day or it dies. The baby needs you there for a few years, but will learn to cope on its own more and more as time goes on. You should ALL have a service based business, but it's about thinking of a product idea that can benefit your service, a service that can benefit the product and of course as per usual. Multiple revenue streams, to ensure you're recession proof. James

These are the emails I'm sending to you guys to get you to attend my talks, this one is for my Melbourne event, so if you're in Australia make sure you read it :) https://mailchi.mp/bed7f919f384/the-m-word Remember if you need me I'm on james@jamessmithacademy.com I'll share some of the queries you email me with in the group

If you're a personal trainer in Australia on the fence about the Melbourne event read this: https://mailchi.mp/b05efbf38273/what-it-really-costs

PRICING HACK - No one is going to come to you for PT for ONE SESSION. so make your single session price astronomically high. I used to charge £55 an hour. So I made my single session price £90. "Hey James how much is PT? Yeah it's £90 for a session, however if you buy a block of 10x I'll do it for £550, offer ends next week." You can elicit a contrast to your pricing very simply and get people to buy a block of PT as a perceived discount. This and MANY MORE hacks at my business mentorship days. Melbourne now on sale. Brighton @ifs_events too.

Stephen just messaged me about 'appearance and being a personal trainer' Don't forget, if you have lost weight yourself, if you have loose skin or you have what you would consider a 'sub-par' physique for a personal trainer, it is not a weakness. Your prospects are not eyeballing you up as who is in best shape. They're after empathy, relatability and someone who can help them. If you've lost 40kg and you're worried you're not toned, don't lose sleep, your future customers see someone who knows what the journey looks like. For any of you out there worrying about your age, your physique or the symmetry of your face. IF YOU REALLY CARE AND GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR CLIENTS, you'll make your way to the top 10% of personal trainers without even breaking a sweat. If I could write Stephen's PT board message it would say "Hi, I'm Stephen, I bet not many people on this board of personal trainers has lost 40kg or knows what it's like to hate their reflection every day. I not only know your struggles, but I know how to defeat them. I may not be called up any time soon to cover Men's Health magazine, but who cares, I'm here to help you do the same journey I've done. Here's my number, let me know what you want to accomplish and let's make it happen. Stephen." Keep the emails coming

And those of you in 🇦🇺 i just dropped tickets for a business mentorship day: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/jamessmithacademy/879243 come see me in person and lets hash out your issues face to face

I'm on james@jamessmithacademy.com - if you want to run anything by me you don't mind me sharing with other PTs in this group, you're welcome to email me. My Melbourne event went on sale this AM - if you haven't got the email and you're keen to come, pop me an email too.

Hey guys, I just had a chat with a lad on email and he said he's got 37 1-2-1 clients. Now I'm not here to tell you how to run your business but let me tell you this: You're way better off having 15x clients who see you 2x a week, or 10x clients who see you 3x a week. It will take time to get to this point but imagine this. Managing 10 clients vs managing 30... it's 1/3rd of the admin, 1/3rd of the effort educating and talking. Which means you can give them 3x the amount of support, chat, voicenotes and attention to things inside and outside their gym and nutrition. Giving someone 3x MORE attention is worth considerably more on paper and not to mention, for someone to afford YOU (where hopefully you're the highest paid in your facility) for 3 SESSIONS A WEEK?! Well they'd need to REALLY CARE about their goals and be financially in a position to AFFORD that VALUE. Which is why it's easier to find 10x of these gold standard clients than it is to find 30x regular 1 a week clients. Something to think about...
