These female war veterans are pictured in Addis Ababa's Menelik Square in 1973. Women played a pivotal role in Ethiopia’s victory at the Battle of Adwa, standing alongside Emperor Menelik II and reshaping their societal status. Menelik’s leadership was crucial in uniting Ethiopia’s forces, securing strategic alliances, and coordinating a well-planned resistance against the Italians. In addition to Menelik’s efforts, Empress Taitu played a decisive role. She commanded thousands of troops and executed a water blockade that weakened the Italian forces. She also strongly advised against diplomatic concessions that could have compromised Ethiopia’s sovereignty. Women contributed as intelligence officers, nurses, and logistical supporters, ensuring the army remained well-equipped. Some fought in combat, while others gathered intelligence.
