1. Plurals These are not just nouns. This includes matching pronouns and plural verb forms. I always seem to see people using 'it' when they should be using 'they' and vice versa. Keep in mind forms like 'them / themselves/ their' and so on. 2. Articles Learn the rules for articles and learn them well. You can't edit for something that you don't understand. Once you understand articles at a detailed level, always remember to edit for them. 3. Subject/Verb agreement This is basic singular and plural verb forms again. This stuff is taught at an elementary level, so having these mistakes isn't really something that tells the examiner 'I am a 7'. At this point, things get more optional. Remember the priority is the points above. Only focus on the following if you definitely have time and are confident about the first three points. 4. Check for sentence fragments. Sometimes people write sentences with no verb. '-ing' words in isolation are not verbs, so make sure that every verb has a subject, every subject has a verb, and every two clauses have a connecting word. 5. Check for spelling You can only do this if you know how to spell. So, make sure you are a good speller. Use Microsoft spellcheck as you practice and keep an eye on words you aren't sure about. Later on, practice with spell check off initially and then turn it on when you are done to see how you went. This is the last one. It is only really necessary for advanced writers. 6. Improve wording. This could involve playing with word order, adding a more precise synonym or just making a sentence a bit more natural. At this point, it could be anything that you feel makes your writing a bit better. This step can only happen when your English is advanced and is more of a polish on high quality essays.
