The pinnacle of scientific thought of that period was the three-volume work of A. N. Afanasyev β€œPoetic views of the Slavs on nature” (1865–1869) - a real encyclopedia of Slavic natural mythology, mainly based on folklore material. You can disagree with Alexander Nikolaevich about one or another of his interpretations, but without his work it is impossible to find out what the Slavs thought about the sun, thunderstorm, earth, plants, animals... To the displeasure of the church, now everyone has seen how β€œOrthodox” the Russian people are . Beneath the shell of a forcibly imposed, official faith lay an almost untouched pagan worldview. What Belinsky said to Gogol was confirmed: there is still a lot of β€œsuperstition” (paganism) among the people, but there is no (Christian) religiosity. β€œOfficials in Christ” repaid the great scientist: expelled from his job for publishing β€œblasphemous” legends, A. N. Afanasyev died in poverty...
