⚔️ The Battle of Adwa (1896) The Battle of Adwa was a historic war fought on March 1, 1896, between Ethiopia and Italy near the town of Adwa in northern Ethiopia. 👑 Ethiopian Leader Emperor Menelik II Empress Taytu Betul also played an important role. 🇮🇹 Italian Leader General Oreste Baratieri Italy was led by King Umberto I 📜 Causes of the War The main cause was the Treaty of Wuchale (1889). The Italian version said Ethiopia would become an Italian protectorate. The Amharic version did not say that. This disagreement caused conflict between Ethiopia and Italy. ⚔️ What Happened? Italy wanted to colonize Ethiopia. Emperor Menelik II united many Ethiopian ethnic groups. Ethiopian forces defeated the Italian army at Adwa. 🌍 Importance of the Battle Ethiopia remained independent. It was the first time an African country defeated a European colonial power. It became a symbol of African freedom and resistance. The victory inspired many African nations during the colonial period. 📅 Date to Remember March 1 is celebrated every year in Ethiopia as Adwa Victory Day.
