Karin Kneissl, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre, presented a briefing at the UN Security Council via videoconference today. The main message of her speech was that uncontrolled supplies of Western weapons to Ukraine will result in an increase in crime and terrorist threats in Europe, and the consequences could be worse than the war in Yugoslavia. The disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s resulted not only in the first big war in Europe and displacement of millions after 1945, it also provoked a major blackmarket for arms. Dr. Kneissl added that weapons sent to Kiev and mercenaries with combat experience would inevitably return to their countries of origin.

Photo: womankuzbass.ru

Tonight at the G.O.R.K.I. Centre we had a lecture on the history of Libya and its current challenges. At the meeting we discussed problems such as migration, which Muammar Gaddafi considered necessary to confront together with the West in order to prevent the formation of a “black Europe”. Dr. Karin Kneissl elucidated the policy of nationalizing oil companies, which became an example for other resource-rich Arab states and changed the very foundations of the oil market. The issue was also raised about Muammar Gaddafi’s relations with the leaders of European and American countries, who, by shaking his hand in a friendly manner after concluding lucrative contracts, initiated his sophisticated murder in 2011. G.O.R.K.I. Talks meetings take place every second Monday at 17:00. We invite everyone to take part!

Lecture ‘Iran versus Israel: an old conflict with many ramifications’   The Geopolitical Observatory for Russia's Key Issues (G.O.R.K.I. Centre SPbU) invites participants to understand the intricacies of one of the most acute and intractable conflicts in West Asia.   The relations between Iran and Israel were quite strong and promising up to a certain point. After Israel was officially recognised as a state by Turkey in September 1949, the Iranian authorities were no longer afraid of being accused of being the first to break the Muslim blockade of the "Zionist entity". In March 1950, Iran became the second Muslim country to recognise the state of Israel. As late as the 1970s, the Shahanshah State of Iran was considered one of Israel's closest allies and partners, and the countries implemented joint economic and military projects together. The entire relationship changed with the Islamic Revolution in February 1979.   The April escalation of the conflict between the countries was the largest in many years. The longstanding confrontation between Israel and Iran reached a new level. In early April 2024, an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus killed several officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as well as a number of civilians.  In response, Iran attacked Israel for the first time directly from its territory with hundreds of drones and missiles. This attack on 14 April confirmed once again: the contradictions between the countries can lead to a new large-scale conflict in West Asia at any time.   22 April 2024 Time: 17:00 28 Tchaikovsky Street, St. Petersburg The meeting will be held in face-to-face format, in English. Participation in the event is paid, and you also have to register in advance.

Yesterday at the G.O.R.K.I. Centre we had a lecture plus open debate dedicated to the Current issues in West Asia. The modern political architecture of the region is based on several centres of power, comparable in their economic potential. At the same time, political and ideological contradictions between the actors can be very significant, leading to increased tensions and the need to balance on the brink of conflict. For this reason, West Asia attracts the close attention of major international players who, under the pretext of maintaining relative stability in the region, seek their own political and economic advantage.   Such meetings will take place every second Monday at 17:00. We invite everyone to participate!
