Set within a once-stately apartment block in the heart of Istanbul, this novel telles the story of Bonbon Palace, built by a Russian emigre for his wife at the end of the Tsarist regime. The building is now sadly dilapidated, flea-infested and home to ten very different individuals and families.

Fellas, there’s a big difference between female and woman, and the same with male and man. The day you understand this, you’ll live a peaceful life.

As if they ever actually read him. They hate everything , his character stood for. Poor farmer ? Slum dweller ? Labourer ?
Premchand the man who wrote about peasants crushed under debt, women treated as property, caste as a curse, and poverty as everyday violence.
This photo captured in commemorative volume of Zamana resurfaced in 2015 thanks to Rashid Ashraf.
We still quote Premchand.
But do we truly carry his questions ?

"Phate jute pehn kar Premchand muskara rahe hain"
A photo of Munshi Premchand with his wife, Shivrani Devi, his torn shoes quietly visible says more than a thousand hollow speeches people give in his honour every year.
Torn shoes because the man who wrote the greatest stories about India's poor was poor.
But those shoes didn't just become part of a photograph. They became literature. Harishankar Parsai, the master satirist, saw them and wrote one of his sharpest essays: "Premchand ke Phate Jute."
He mocked the fake respect of those who romanticize Premchand while living everything he stood against. Premchand didn't wear khadi for fashion. He didn't write for claps. He wrote the truth - raw, ugly truth about landlords, caste, corruption, and hollow nationalism.
Now, those same rich, elite types the very people Premchand wrote against celebrate him in seminars, put up his photos in halls, and quote him in award speeches.
