«Кот», «котик», «котёнок», «котеночек» — это не про размер. Это про чувство. В русском языке уменьшительно-ласкательные формы говорят не о том, насколько маленький кто-то, а о том, насколько он нам дорог. Мы добавляем суффиксы не для измерения, а для выражения нежности, тепла и любви. Иногда взрослый большой кот может быть «котиком», иногда чемпион мира по боксу может быть «котиком» для своей жены, например. А иногда слово «котеночек», сказанное ребёнку,— это просто способ сказать: ты мне очень важен. Язык — это не про грамматику. Это про эмоции 🤍 “Cat,” “kitty,” “kitten,” “little kitten” — it’s not about size. It’s about emotion. In Russian, diminutive forms are not measurements. They are expressions of affection. We don’t add endings to describe how small someone is — we use them to show warmth, tenderness, and love. A big adult cat can still be a “kotik,” world boxing champion can be called the same name. because the word reflects how we feel, not how big the cat or smth/smb is.

I advise my students to make such cheat sheets (better in their heads, not on paper 😅) to better remember the endings of nouns (and also adjectives, why not) in different cases. Basically, you need to compose a story (at least 5 sentences) about yourself. Each sentence should use a different case. And voilà! You learn this story about yourself by heart — and that’s how you can refresh these endings in your memory! You can follow my advice if you feel that you tend to forget the case endings.
