✍️ Article by Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov titled «The Final Days of World War II: The Defeat and Surrender of Japan» published in Jakarta Globe (04.09.2026) Key points: • September 3 marks the Day of Military Glory in Russia, known as the "Day of Victory over Militarist Japan and the End of World War II". The defeat of Japanese militarism eliminated the last major stronghold of the Axis powers in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Nazi Germany’s ally in the Far East, which had occupied vast territories and subjugated numerous peoples. • Japan’s war in Asia and the Pacific claimed the lives of an estimated 36 million people and caused immense destruction and suffering. In China alone, 10–15 million people were massacred. On the island of Java, 3–4 million were killed, while in Indochina the death toll reached 1–1.5 million. Japan lost 2.1 million military personnel and 800,000 civilians. Some 36,000 Soviet officers and soldiers lost their lives during the liberation of China and Korea from Japanese occupation. • On August 9, 1945, the Soviet Union, fulfilling the commitments it had undertaken at the Yalta Conference of the Allied powers (February 4–11, 1945), entered the war against Japan. The Red Army launched a rapid advance deep into Manchuria. By August 20, after fierce fighting, Soviet forces had reached the Manchurian Plain, split Japanese forces into separate groupings and encircled them. Japanese troops began surrendering in large numbers. • On September 2, 1945, aboard the American battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, with representatives of the Allied powers in attendance, the Instrument of Surrender of Japan was signed, bringing to a formal end the largest conflict in human history, unleashed by fascism and Hitlerism in alliance with Japanese militarism. • The memory of the horrors of World War II and its consequences remains deeply important today. Developments around the world show how easily some countries’ leaders, influenced by Nazi and militarist ideas and pursuing revanchist policies, can forget the tragic chapters of their own history and their past crimes, especially when acknowledging them runs counter to their current political interests. ⚡️ Comment of the Embassy of Russia on the disinformation campaign held by the Embassy of Ukraine in Jakarta The Embassy of Ukraine in Jakarta has recently spread the comment claiming that at least eight Indonesian citizens who visited Russia allegedly joined Russian Armed Forces – is a propaganda-driven disinformation campaign. The copies of e-visas and migration card issued for tourist trips, which were published by the Ukrainian Embassy, certainly do not constitute any evidence of joining military service. At the same time, Ukraine itself is actively recruiting foreign mercenaries into the ranks of its military formations. This is due to their significant losses on the battlefield – over 700,000 killed and 1 million wounded. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has stated that, in the long term, its army should consist of 30–50% foreigners. Kiev employs deceptive methods and makes use of diplomatic missions and affiliated organizations abroad to recruit them. Tens of thousands of citizens from the other countries are currently serving in the Ukrainian army. Several thousand people died, Indonesian citizens were also among them. The Ukrainian Embassy’s allegations about Kiev’s adherence to international humanitarian law and the humane treatment of prisoners of war are extremely cynical. The majority of the prisoners of war who returned from Ukraine as part of prisoners’ exchanges reported torture, abuse, and cruel treatment while in captivity. It is obvious that the anti-Russian disinformation campaign held by the Ukrainian Embassy was timed to coincide with the participation of President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto in the XI Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok and aimed at damaging the Russian-Indonesian relations.

🎙 Address by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the Plenary Session of the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (Vladivostok, Russky Island, September 3, 2026) The event was also attended by President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, Prime Minister of Mongolia Nyam-Osoryn Uchral, Vice President of Myanmar U Nyo Saw, and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang. Key points: • Russia is an active participant in investment and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. We engage with our partners and the region’s leading integration associations on an equal footing. • Our strategic objective is to ensure that the Far East remains a region of cooperation and dynamic transformation in the economy and infrastructure, technological development, workforce training and, of course, the social sphere. • Over the past 11 years, around 25 trillion rubles in capital investment has been attracted to Russia’s Far Eastern regions. As a result, the Far East’s gross regional product has more than tripled over this period – a very strong pace of growth. • The Far East’s key macroeconomic indicators are growing faster than the national average. This is precisely what we sought to achieve when we declared the region’s development a strategic priority for Russia throughout the 21st century. • It is important to continue creating convenient and predictable conditions for investors, taking into account the needs of businesses and the regions while proceeding from Russia’s national interests. • For investors in such projects, and for those launching new enterprises in the Far East and the Arctic, it is important to ensure stable demand for their products. Offset contracts, which are being developed with the support of State Development Corporation VEB.RF, should be used for this purpose as well. • In today’s challenging global environment, amid risks to international shipping and trade, the Northern Sea Route is intended to provide greater flexibility and security for international deliveries, open up new opportunities for transit and coastal shipping, and ensure uninterrupted supplies to Arctic regions. • Our goal is to make navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor year-round. To achieve this, we are building icebreakers and ice-class vessels, expanding our service and rescue fleet and satellite constellation, and strengthening port infrastructure. • We expect that by the end of this decade, freight traffic along the Trans-Arctic Corridor will reach at least 70 million tonnes per year – at least double the current level. • To expand international capital participation in our Far Eastern and Arctic projects, we need to make use of the potential of the Eastern Exchange. As I have already said, we plan to establish a modern financial centre on its basis. • We need to develop new cross-border routes with Asia-Pacific, #BRICS and #EAEU countries. We are open to cooperation with all our partners in this area. Full transcript

🇷🇺🇮🇩 On September 2, 2026, President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto arrived in Vladivostok to attend the 11th Eastern Economic Forum as the guest of honor. 🤝 The Eastern Economic Forum is a leading platform for developing the economy of the Far East and expanding international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. 🇷🇺 Interview of Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov with ANTARA for the International Corner Program (August 31, 2026) Key points: • Even before the establishment of our bilateral diplomatic relations, my country, the former Soviet Union, supported Indonesia at the United Nations and supported the idea of recognizing Indonesia as a sovereign and independent state. • I believe that our nations - or perhaps even our civilizations, Russian civilization and Indonesian civilization - are very close to each other. Geographically, we are very distant, but I believe the souls of our two nations are very close. We are friendly and peaceful peoples, and even culturally we are close to each other. • Last year we received more than 4 000 applications for 300 scholarships. That means more than ten applicants for each scholarship. The entire quota was used, and I believe it may be possible to increase it every year, perhaps to 300-350 scholarships this year. • This [scholarships in Russia] is a good opportunity for Indonesian youth because we provide opportunities to obtain degrees in areas that are strategically important for Indonesia, including STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - as well as high-technology fields such as space exploration and nuclear science. • In September, the International Youth Festival will take place in Yekaterinburg. It will bring together around 10,000 young people from Russia and foreign countries, and I expect quite a large delegation from Indonesia to attend. Watch in full

Baca selengkapnya

🇷🇺🇮🇩 On September 1, 2026, the Russian House in Jakarta hosted a meeting with members of the Indonesian delegation who will take part in the International Youth Festival 2026 in Yekaterinburg. 🎙 The guests were welcomed by Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov, Head of the Russian House Nikita Shilikov, and Head of Indonesia's National Preparatory Committee Fauzan Al-Rasyid. 💬 In his remarks, Sergei Tolchenov said: International youth exchanges play an important role in strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between our countries. I am confident that participation in the Festival will give the Indonesian delegates an opportunity to learn more about Russia, its culture and traditions, as well as to establish new friendships and professional contacts. I hope that your trip to Yekaterinburg will be a memorable and rewarding experience and will open up new opportunities for further cooperation between the youth of Russia and Indonesia. 👉 During the meeting, the delegates were briefed on the upcoming Festival programme, discussed organizational aspects of the trip and received practical recommendations to help them prepare for their stay in Yekaterinburg and make the most of the opportunities offered by this international youth platform. 📷 As part of the event, the exhibition «The Surrender of Japan and the End of World War II», provided by the Victory Museum, was also presented. 🇷🇺🇮🇩 On September 1, 2026, Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov took part in the Moscow City Tourism Committee Roadshow in Jakarta. 🤝 The event brought together representatives of the Russian and Indonesian tourism industries and featured presentations of Moscow’s tourism potential and B2B meetings between tourism companies of the two countries. 🎙 Welcoming remarks were delivered by Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov, Trade Representative of Russia to Indonesia Alexander Masaltsev, Head of the Russian House in Jakarta Nikita Shilikov, Chair of the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Nunung Rismiati, and Head of the Directorate for Asia, CIS and Latin America of the Moscow City Tourism Committee Maria Pasuginova. 💬 Ambassador Sergei Tolchenov: Tourism is an increasingly important dimension of Russian-Indonesian strategic partnership. The establishment of direct flights between Moscow and Denpasar by Aeroflot back in 2024 has created more convenient conditions for travel between our countries and has given an additional impetus to people-to-people contacts. Indonesia remains one of the most attractive destinations for Russian tourists, while the number of Indonesian travelers to Russia is also growing. Our task is to turn this mutual interest into a sustainable two-way tourist flow. <…> Moscow has everything to become one of the key destinations for Indonesian visitors to Russia. It combines a rich historical and cultural heritage with the highly developed infrastructure of a modern city. The Kremlin and Red Square, leading museums and theatres, major cultural events, gastronomy, new urban spaces and a wide range of family, business and even healthcare tourism opportunities make Moscow attractive to very different categories of travellers. ✅ The Roadshow provided a platform for establishing new business contacts and exploring opportunities for further cooperation between the tourism industries of the two countries. 💬 Head of the Directorate for Asia, CIS and Latin America of the Moscow City Tourism Committee Maria Pasuginova: Indonesia is one of Moscow’s key partners in Southeast Asia, and the tourist flow is showing steady growth. In 2025, the number of trips from Indonesia to Moscow reached 7,500, compared with 5,000 in 2024. The positive momentum continued in the first half of 2026, when Moscow welcomed 3,600 arrivals from Indonesia, 12% more than in the same period last year. Moscow offers Indonesian travellers a unique combination of rich cultural heritage, world-famous landmarks and the infrastructure and vibrant urban life of a modern metropolis. We see significant potential for further growth, and today’s business mission is another important step towards strengthening long-term cooperation and introducing more Indonesian visitors to everything Moscow has to offer.
