Ovulatory dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) is a type of abnormal uterine bleeding that occurs due to hormonal imbalances during ovulation.
It can happen when there is inadequate progesterone production after ovulation, leading to prolonged or heavy bleeding. In some cases, ovulatory DUB can also occur when there is excessive estrogen production or when there is a delay in the LH surge, leading to irregular shedding of the endometrium. Ovulatory DUB is more common in adolescents and perimenopausal women, as their hormonal fluctuations are more pronounced.
Anovulatory dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) is a common cause of abnormal bleeding in adolescent girls, especially in the early years after menarche. It occurs when ovulation does not occur regularly, and the hormonal changes that usually occur during the menstrual cycle are disrupted. In perimenarchal adolescents, the HPG (hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal) axis, which controls the menstrual cycle, may not be fully mature, and the ovaries may not be able to respond to estrogen with an LH surge, leading to anovulatory cycles. This can result in irregular or heavy bleeding.
